V. Turner is genderfluid and uses any pronouns.

Why did you choose Gender Issues?

I was raised with a family that was strict on what was for boys and girls despite us constantly breaking these norms. So I stopped taking them seriously and spent my childhood challenging what it meant to be a girl. When we were given the subject Gender Issues to learn about in my 'Ideas and Expressions' class, I already knew i wanted to talk about it for my final project since gender has always been a prominent subject in my life.

I wish I was a boy.
They get to play outside with their friends and go over to sleepovers with them.
Yet when I ask to do the same I'm just told no.

I wish I was a boy.
I went to carry a chair for a teacher when she asked us to clean up. My parents say i'm strong yet here i am, in trouble in the hallway, being told that "im not strong enough and could get a hernia." I don't even know what that means. How come I'm strong but never strong enough?

I wish I was a boy.
Maybe then when I go to the doctor for the flu they don't ask me if I could be pregnant. I'm not even allowed to have guys as friends, much less find the time to kiss them since I'm always in the house.

I wish I was a boy.
My great grandma wrapped her fingers around my wrist asking how I got so skinny and to share my routine. I hated the fact I couldn't eat with braces and the weight loss that came with it, yet everyone keeps telling me they love my body and they wish they were me.

I wish I was a boy.
No one really comes to the girl's games. The bleachers were always empty when I played Volleyball, Softball, and Basketball. Maybe we would win more games if we had people cheering us on like the boys do.

I wish I was a boy.
What do you mean the boys get to slap our butts every Friday yet when I kick one of them in the balls I get written up?

I wish I was a boy.
Maybe then when I'm in a relationship it doesn't feel like they're waiting for me to give something up all in the name of love.

I wish I were a boy.
Cause you would never compare your max weight to me if i was. I weigh 140 pounds so squatting 160 pounds is an achievement…If that's your warmup good for you. Who asked though?

I wish I were a boy.
I'm sick of being asked "where's my grandchildren" as if i even want that right now. Plus I wasn't even allowed to look at boys so why would I even magically pop out with a boyfriend? You never gave me the tools for that avenue yo.

I wish I were a boy.
But then again I'm black. So to be a black boy in america or a black woman and face "you look like your daddy" comments is a lose lose huh. Oh well at least as a boy I would be respected.

I wish I were respected
I wouldn't want to be a boy if I was treated like an equal.
